Nutmeg Contributes to Success of NHSDC’s Sponsored Hackathon

05/02/2013 | Filed under: Company News| Permalink

Giving back to the community is deeply ingrained in Nutmeg Consulting’s culture. Most of our staff come from a Not-for-Profit background and virtually all of our staff are active in their respective communities. We like to think Nutmeg reflects the values of our founders and staff so we try and contribute as a company where we can.

Recently, Chris Shipley (President), Adam Yarnott (Software Developer) and Seth Walter (Database Administrator) participated in the “Advocate for the Homeless Hackathon” as part of National Human Services Data Consortium (NHSDC)’s Spring 2013 conference. The event was held in Seattle, WA, on April 25th and 26th. The goal of the Hackathon was to “create a web service / smart phone app that will allow anyone to easily advocate for the homeless.”

Nutmeg staff along with students from San Jose State University, staff from Cisco Systems and Alexandria Consulting, donated time and equipment to assist in the Hackathon and development of the app.

View our videos posted on YouTube (links provided below) to see the work done by the SJSU students as well as a preview of the in-progress app as described by Chris Shipley.

Nutmeg Presents at COHHIO Conference

Russ Cormier (CEO of Nutmeg Consulting) and Carol Walter (Executive Director of CCEH) presented “A Successful Statewide HPRP Collaboration” at the April 2012  Housing Ohio Annual Conference.

The presentation was widely attended and described the process of how HPRP was implemented entirely across the State of Connecticut, with five municipalities and one large application all separately funded by HUD. Attendees learned how we navigated issues surrounding demarcation of service, two different HMISsystems, and the aggregation of statewide reporting. In addition, the presentation touched on how analyzing data helped policy makers refocus their target populations and the processes in place.

Robots? Did you say Robots?

Nutmeg Consulting is proud to sponsor the "Technowizards" , a group of dedicated, young engineers of the future from Howell Cheney Technical High School in Manchester, CT. They are competing in the annual FIRST Robotics Competition , which pits teams across the nation to design, build and compete against each other based on a pre-determined set of rules. The team is comprised of students who are responsible for the design, implementation and project management, of the robot along with adult mentors to help guide them along during the consolidated build process. Each year, the FIRST program issues a new challenge to schools across the country, gives them a set of tools and general guidelines to follow. The teams then go off for 6 weeks, create their projects and sign up for various competitions. This year, the "Technowizards" will be competing at:

Virginia Regional - March 18th - 20th at Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA
Connecticut Regional - April 1st - 3rd at the Connecticut Convention Center, Hartford, CT

Good Luck TECHNOWIZARDS!
