Unplugged! Oops… (Computer Horror story part 3)

Dec/Tue/2015 | Filed under: Thoughts on IT | Permalink

This past month celebrated the 46th anniversary of Monty Python and for those of you too young to remember one of the most brilliant and classic British comedy shows of all time I apologize. The co-founder of the show John Cleese, once did a comedy sketch where he was a salesperson demonstrating a copier. For some reason he couldn’t get it to work so he called his technical guy who immediately appeared (great customer support) and plugged it in! That was a skit. This really happened.

How many times have people called customer support to fix something that if they had taken a few minutes, they could have fixed themselves. I recalled one incident, where the support person visited the client several times for "emergencies" that they had created by unplugging some part of their networked equipment. On one occasion they had unplugged their cable modem to plug in a CD player, later they unplugged the adapter for a 4 port hub they did not know was connected to the back office copier/printer. On another occasion they unplugged the adapter for the cable modem that was hooked up to the Internet and plugged in an old DSL modem that was stored under the same desk when rearranging furniture. If only they had stopped to plan ahead before they did something, they could have saved a lot of time, aggravation and money. Moral of the story “Plan before you unplug!” A few quick paper and tape tags or a simple diagram sketched out before our customers attempted a fix would have made the journey a little smoother.

We all smile at these stories but they are all too prevalent. While the stories above are small problems with simple solutions, Nutmeg Consulting has seen this happen on a much larger (and more expensive) scale time after time. It’s one of the reasons we specialize in project management and technology planning. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure after all. And as a side note, how many people “clean” their computers on a regular basis to get rid of junk, temporary files, cookies and history? If your machine is running slow there are many things you can do to improve it without buying a new one.
